The Locust, Revelation 9: my study notes

Key passages

Intent. This was originally created as a visual to supplement our Bible Class exploration of the Book of Revelation.

  1. The description. The locusts were shaped like horses prepared for battle, with crowns like gold, faces as the faces of men, hair as the hair of women, teeth as the teeth of lions, breastplates of iron, wings that sounded like chariots, and tails like scorpions (Revelation 9:7–10).
  2. The Assyrian bulls. This description called to mind the famous Assyrian bull sculptures. While I am not convinced that these sculptures (or the Assyrians generally) are indicated by the locusts of Revelation 9, I used these sculptures as a starting point for aesthetics.

“This document is not intended to share any specific interpretation, only how I arrived at the visuals I created.”

The locusts come with the fifth trumpet: see the Trumpets Begin to Sound, and the riders of the sixth trumpet in Horse and Rider, Revelation 9. More from the whole book in my Art of the Apocalypse collection.
